According to the Legend, in the 15th century, four thieves set about robbing and stealing from the victims of the plague. Surrounded by dead or dying corpses, they filled their looting bags day after day and never become ill. Upon their arrest they were offered leniency in exchange for revealing the secret of how they stayed unaffected by the illness. The recipe they gave authorities was reported to be a blend of essential oils, hence the name.
